Gallipoli was originally inhabited by the Messapians and then by the Greeks, who called it Kalé Polis, meaning "beautiful city." During this period, Gallipoli ruled vast territories, minting its own coins until it was subjugated to Rome in 265 BC, becoming a military station and an independent municipality. The Castle: A 16th-century castle incorporating the former Angevin fortification and including lunettes surmounted by a circular tower.
